Can’t find an answer?
CIS is an HMRC scheme where contractors deduct tax at source from payments to subcontractors and report those deductions monthly.
If you pay others for construction work, register as a contractor.
If you get paid for construction work, register as a subcontractor.
You may need both if you both pay and get paid for construction work.
You risk the higher 30% deduction (instead of 20%) and possible penalties. Register before you start paying or being paid for construction work.
You will need your legal or trading name, UTR, contact details, and (if a company) your company number and registered office. Contractors will need the be registered for PAYE to run deductions and file returns.
We submit as soon as you have provided us with all the necessary information to register. HMRC usually confirms within a few days, depending on checks. We keep you updated and liaise with HMRC if queries arise.
No. CIS is a withholding system. Deductions count toward your final tax; registration helps ensure the correct rate and smoother cash flow.
For subcontractors, the main CIS deduction rates are:
- 0%: if HMRC has granted gross payment status (no deductions at source)
- 20%: the standard rate for registered subcontractors
- 30%: the higher rate used where a subcontractor is not registered or cannot be matched/verified
Contractors must verify each subcontractor with HMRC and apply the correct rate on every payment.

Companies House will not accept any filing without it, and no service provider can submit on your behalf unless you provide this code.
CIS registration does not require this code, but we ask for it to keep your account secure and protect your company data.
Lost your code? You can request Companies House to resend it in one click from your Online Filings dashboard. It will be posted to your registered office address and usually arrives within 10 working days.
